The How To Guide for Your Character Backstory 🖐

1. Start with the Basics 🪪​

Decide on your character’s core details:

  • Full Name: Include first, last, and maybe a nickname.
  • Age & Birthday: This can influence maturity and experiences.
  • Gender & Pronouns: (if relevant for your RP style).
  • Appearance: hair/eye color, clothing style etc.
  • Occupation: (job, school, gang, business, etc).

2. Give Them a Past 📖​

Your character’s past shapes their present. Think About:

  • Where they were born (city, small town, country).
  • Family background (parents, siblings, guardians).
  • Childhood experiences (happy, rough, unusual?).
  • Major life events that shaped them (loss, success, betrayal, relocation).

📌 Don’t overcomplicate! You don’t need a 5-page history — just enough to explain why they are the way they are.

3. Define Their Personality 🎭​

Decide how they act and why:

  • Positive traits (kind, ambitious, loyal, smart).
  • Negative traits (stubborn, secretive, impulsive).
  • Habits/quirks (always late, talks to themselves, loves coffee).
  • Values & beliefs (family first, “money is everything,” trust no one).

📌 Tip: Flaws make characters interesting — don’t make them perfect.

4. Give Them Goals & Motivations 🥅​

Ask yourself:

  • What do they want right now? (money, love, revenge, power)
  • What drives them to act? (fear, loyalty, ambition)
  • What are they afraid of losing?

📌 These goals will guide how you RP them in different situations.

5. Add Some Secrets or Conflicts 🔍​

Every good character has something hidden:

  • A secret they don’t want others to know.
  • An enemy from their past.
  • A mistake they regret.
  • A family member they’re avoiding.

📌 Secrets make your RP unpredictable and fun.

6. Connect Them to the World 🌍​

  • Have they lived here long, or are they new?
  • Do they know any factions, gangs, businesses, or people?
  • Do they have a reason to be in this place?

📌 This makes it easier to start roleplaying with others from day one.

7. Keep It Flexible 🤸‍♀️​

Your character’s story can grow during RP.

  • Don’t lock them into one path — let events change them.
  • Be ready to adapt if your RP takes unexpected turns.
